iOS Tip: Too many breaking news alerts? Here’s how to stop or reduce them

The first time you run the News app on iPhone or iPad, you are greeted with a welcome screen that helps to curate a custom news feed for you. If you hurry through the process it’s really easy to enable breaking news alerts for what seems to be every news source. I’ve seen many phones that get alerts from CNN, NPR, and many others. Often times they are the same story.

Here’s how restore your sanity:

  1. Open the News app

  2. Tap the “Following” heart icon on the bottom navigation bar

  3. Scroll down and tap the bell icon next to each news source you want to disable to change from a blue to a grey bell.

If your news alerts come from other apps you can either go into the app and choose the types of alerts you want to receive (each app will be different) or you can completely block settings. To do so go to the Settings app, scroll to the bottom and tap the name of the app you want to stop getting notifications from, tap Notifications, and then slide Allow Notifications off.
