Not sure which Mac, iPhone, or iPad you have? Each device has an About screen that shows its model and software version. Here’s where to look.
Find your Mac model

- Click the Apple menu in the top-left corner of your screen.
- Choose About This Mac.
The window shows the model name, along with details such as its chip and year. In the example below, it’s a MacBook Air with an M2 chip, introduced in 2022. It also has 16 GB of memory.
For most questions about an Apple silicon Mac, the model name, chip, and year are the useful details to share. An older Intel Mac shows a processor name instead of an Apple chip.
Find your iPhone or iPad model

- Open Settings.
- Tap General > About.
- Look for Model Name.
In this example, the model is iPhone 16 Pro. The Name at the top is a nickname you can change, so it isn’t a reliable way to identify the model.
The iOS Version or iPadOS Version line tells you which software is installed. When asking for help, sharing both the model name and software version usually gives the person helping you a useful starting point.
If you post a screenshot publicly, cover the serial number first. It identifies your individual device, rather than the model.
