Running low on space? Here’s where to check how much storage your Mac, iPhone, iPad, and iCloud account are using.
- Mac storage: Choose Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage. On macOS Monterey or earlier, choose Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage.
- iPhone or iPad storage: Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage or iPad Storage.
- iCloud storage on a Mac: Open System Settings > your name > iCloud. Click Manage for more details.
- iCloud storage on an iPhone or iPad: Open Settings > your name > iCloud. Tap Storage or Manage Storage for more details, depending on your software version.

Device storage and iCloud storage are separate. Your Mac, iPhone, and iPad store data on their own internal drives or storage chips. iCloud stores data on Apple’s servers and keeps supported information in sync across your devices.
Buying more iCloud storage does not increase your device’s physical storage capacity. With storage optimization enabled, features such as iCloud Photos and iCloud Drive can reduce the space used on your device by keeping some originals in iCloud and downloading them when needed. You need an internet connection to download content that is not already stored on your device.
