macOS 26 Tahoe gets clipboard history

You’ll need to enable the feature in System Settings.

If you are a heavy user of copy/paste, you may be excited to learn that macOS 26 Tahoe, introduced last week, gains clipboard history! Now, every time you copy something, it can be later retrieved even after you have copied other content. However, for privacy reasons, it is not enabled by default.

A quick warning: all copied text is retained for eight hours. This can include confidential information such as passwords. Think twice before enabling this on a Mac that others use.

To enable clipboard history, visit the Apple menu > System Settings > Spotlight. Scroll to the bottom and turn on “Clipboard Search”

To access clipboard history, first open Spotlight your favorite way:

  • Press the magnifying glass button (F4) on newer keyboards

  • Press ⌘-Spacebar

  • Click the magnifying glass icon on your menu bar; to add it, go to the Apple menu > System Settings > Menu Bar

Then, click the double-page icon to view your clipboard history.

  • To search your history, begin typing a few letters

  • To copy something back to your clipboard, click the double-page icon to the right of the desired item

  • To paste something without copying it first, double-click the item

  • To remove an item, right-click (control-click) it and choose Delete Item

You’ll find your clipboard history in Spotlight by clicking the double-page icon.

Clipboard history will show you a running list of everything you have copied in the past eight hours.
