Apple releases “26” software: iOS, macOS, iPadOS, tvOS, watchOS, HomePodOS, visionOS
Today, Apple released the big annual software updates across all systems. These are really big updates, and if you haven’t been following this news, you’ll be surprised to learn about two of the biggest changes:
New versioning system unifies the names and makes it simpler to understand. Much like automobile companies, the software versions are named for the upcoming year. Last year, we had iOS 18, macOS 15, and watchOS 11. This year, it’s iOS 26, macOS 26, and watchOS 26. It certainly makes my job easier because I don’t have to remember what version each different product was at, and it makes it easier to know how old the software is.
Redesigned “Liquid Glass” interface. For the first time in 12 years, Apple is making major visual changes to the user interface. As our devices are becoming more and more just slabs of glass, the new software interface doubles down on the glass look, with many elements appearing as drops of water or frosted glass, refracting the items behind them. I’m a fan, but it has been a little controversial. If you find that it makes things harder to read, you can soften up the effect in Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Reduce Transparency.
I have been using the new software for a few months in pre-release form, and my favorite features include:
The new call screening feature allows Siri to answer unknown callers to ask for their name and the purpose of the call, or Siri will wait and listen to the hold music for you (Apple Intelligence required)
Verification codes can be autofilled on third-party browsers and from third-party email apps.
You can continue using iMessage for a SIM even after disabling it. Very useful for travelers or people with more than two lines.
Live Translation allows your iPhone to act as a translator in phone calls, text message conversations, FaceTime calls, and in real live with AirPods Pro 2, AirPods 4 with ANC (Apple Intelligence required)
iPad Multitasking now allows your iPad to work more like a Mac, with the ability to rearrange windows on your screen.
