Rename Bluetooth Devices for Easy Management

Assorted Bluetooth headphones and speakers surrounded by question marks

It’s all too easy to end up with more Bluetooth devices connected to your Mac than you can shake a stick at. Apple devices will likely have sensible names, like Magic Mouse 2, but what if someone has given you a device with their name in it? Or you’ve ended up with a device called something really random like f023cp37. You can rename supported Bluetooth accessories, including pointing devices, keyboards, earbuds, headphones, and speakers. First, make sure your device is connected via Bluetooth. On macOS Ventura 13 or later, open System Settings > Bluetooth, click the More Info button next to the connected accessory, click Name, and enter a new name. On earlier versions, open System Preferences > Bluetooth, Control-click the connected accessory, and choose Rename. The screenshot below shows the older interface. Some accessories do not support custom names.

On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the More Info button next to the connected accessory, then tap Name and enter a new name. If Name is unavailable or the new name does not stick, the accessory may not support renaming on your device.
