Explore the video screensavers and wallpaper in macOS Sonoma

When macOS Sonoma was released a few months ago, one of the highlighted features was new videos for screensavers and wallpaper, similar to the drone videos you might recognize from Apple TV. After upgrading to macOS Sonoma, you are asked if you would like to keep your current screensaver and wallpaper or switch to the Sonoma default. The default is simply a drone shot flying over the Sonoma vineyards, which animates as a screensaver. When you bump the mouse, the video continues behind your login screen. Once you log in, the video glides into a still frame wallpaper. It's silly and doesn't make you more productive, but it does make your Mac feel more like a work of art.

But did you know that the Sonoma video is just the tip of the iceburg? Yes, there are iceburgs, too! macOS Sonoma offers 134 beautiful video screensavers: 61 landscapes, 30 cityscapes, 21 underwater, and 22 from space.

To explore them, go to the Apple menu > System Settings > Screensaver. Be careful though, these do take up gobs of space, so you should only use the shuffle options if you have storage to spare as having them all loaded can take up nearly 60 GB.

On the other hand, if you have an older Intel Mac you might find that these screensavers cause your fan to run uncontrolably. Or you may use your Mac for running background activities such as processing video and these screensavers slow that down. If so you could choose to only them as a wallpaper in the Apple menu > System Settings > Wallpaper. Make sure you turn off the option to "show as screen saver" to keep them from running as videos.
