Apple releases iOS 18.2 macOS 15.2 with ChatGPT integration, more
Today, Apple released the next updates across all OSes. This includes:
iOS 18.2
iPadOS 18.2
macOS 15.2
watchOS 11.2
HomePod 18.2
tvOS 18.2
Apple has also released some security-only updates for older software:
iPadOS 17.7.3 (only for devices that don't support iOS 18) — there is no iOS 17.7.3 because all iPhones that run iOS 17 can run iOS 18
macOS Sonoma 14.7.2
macOS Ventura 13.7.2
While there are lots of little improvements throughout (including bug, security, and performance fixes), the star is the next set of Apple Intelligence features. Specifically:
ChatGPT integration: if Siri thinks your request is better served by ChatGPT, it can be sent there (using your own ChatGPT account for additional personal context or using a paid model, if desired, or anonymously if you have no account)
Image Playground: create images using a description
Genmoji: create an emoji by describing what you want
Image Wand: create images within the Notes app based on your sketches or from scratch
Writing Tools gains the ability to describe the changes you want made rather than just selecting from a few set options
Visual Intelligence (iPhone 16 required) can describe what the camera sees and give you important information, such as business hours and reviews, or to get more information, the photo can be passed along to ChatGPT or Google Image Search. With ChatGPT, you can follow up with more questions, such as "How many calories are in this?" "How do I care for this plant?" or "What items on this menu look vegetarian?"
Priority Messages pushes messages that appear important to the top of your inbox (be aware that Apple Intelligence doesn't seem to analyze for scams, so very often scam emails get highlighted because they contain urgent-sounding words).
Apple Intelligence in more countries: English in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK; more languages coming in the spring.
But even if you have a device that isn't compatible with Apple Intelligence or if you live in a region where it is not yet supported, there are some new features for you as well (and security and performance updates):
Find My sharing can create a link to share Air Tag location with others, such as with airline baggage services (Delta and United, and several international carriers said they are going to support this)
Default apps can be set in a central location for mail, messages, calling, call filtering, browser, passwords, wallet, and keyboard
Mail Categories automatically sorts your mail into Primary, Transactions, Updates, and Promotions
Photos app gets a video player that works more like it did in iOS 17
Voice Memos allows you to layer multiple tracks (iPhone 16 Pro only)
Apple Watch Remote app gets a pause button while recording video
Apple TV gets a Snoopy screensaver
Apple TV gets 21:9 ratio support for projectors
Apple Music gets natural language search so you can describe the music you want to hear by any combination of genre, mood, activity, topic, etc.
Apple Vision Pro gets wide and ultrawide display support for Mac Virtual Display
Apple Vision Pro has audio routed through the headset when using Mac Virtual Display
Lots of little tweaks. For example, Mobile Hotspot can now be used during iPhone Mirroring, and Apple Account Passkey can be used even if you use a third-party password manager
